The Arranmore population were without a burial ground for their dead, so all burials took place in Templecrone on the mainland. Following the accidental drowning of nine Islanders who were travelling to Templecrone with a funeral party, the islanders were finally allocated a burial ground at Chapel Strand, on a rocky outcrop known as An Chaiseal. The headland had barely any soil, so clay and sand had to be carried from the strand to cover the coffins. A second graveyard was developed and completed in 1893, and later extended in 1933. The current Graveyard was completed in 1993, and plans are in place to develop a new graveyard in the near future.
